Courage Cards

Courage Cards: A legacy of art, ability and impact

For more than six decades, Courage Cards brought inspiration and holiday cheer to mailboxes and vital support to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. What began in 1958 as a single two-color pencil drawing grew into a beloved holiday tradition. Thousands of holiday cards featuring original artwork, many by artists with disabilities, were sent each year by businesses, organizations and individuals who believed in creativity without barriers and community without limits.

The Courage Cards story

In 1958, the first Courage Card was mailed. It was a simple design that carried a bold idea: art can open doors. Over the next 65+ years, Courage Cards showcased original museum-quality artwork many created by artists with disabilities uniting artistry with purpose. Every card helped advance rehabilitation services and the mission that began at Courage Center in 1928 and Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in 1942, now together as Courage Kenny.

Through an annual art search and design process, artists from across the United States contributed work that became festive greetings, thoughtful notes, and lasting keepsakes all proudly made in the USA. By showcasing art, Courage Cards helped illustrate that a physical or sensory impairment does not diminish creativity, talent or ability.

Impact by the numbers
  • Millions of dollars raised to support Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute’s services helping children and adults with disabilities achieve health, wellness, and independence.
  • Thousands of cards sent each year by businesses, organizations, and individuals turning holiday traditions into community impact.
  • Hundreds of artists recognized nationally while retaining ownership and copyright of their art.
Why we’re saying goodbye to Courage Cards

Courage Cards have been a cherished tradition in our community for generations. Over time, though, the way people celebrate and connect has changed. Fewer families and businesses are sending physical cards, and many are choosing digital greetings instead for convenience, cost, and sustainability. While this program is ending, the mission of Courage Cards continues through the Allina Health Art of Possibilities Art Show & Sale and will continue to celebrate that art knows no barriers.
