My paintings are about a collection of experiences. I want my work to evoke emotions and provoke thought by exploring the dynamic interplay of light and color, I try to create works that reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary. Painting is essential in my life. Color is a life force to me. My palette reflects the seasons. Nature is my inspiration. I am fascinated by the ever-evolving shapes and variety found in nature. The sand, ocean, and surrounding areas contain changing worlds, while trees strike me as guardians of nature in their stature and complexity. Great open spaces and skies inspire me. The longer I study them, the more abstract they become, yet still solid and concrete. My process always begins with observation. I try to take a “photo” with my mind—a mental sketch. I have often wished my eyes were cameras. I concentrate on one section—similar to cropping an image. This helps with the composition of the piece. Then my imagination and experience of the subject take over. I currently work primarily in acrylics but also work in watercolors and pastels.
