About the Artist
Martha Bird
I am an artist, a nurse and a truth teller. The artist in me wants to express, the nurse in me wants to heal, and the truth teller wants to express universal truths. I was working as a nurse and injured my back while also living with PTSD. To begin moving off of bedrest, I reconnected with my creative self by taking art classes. Through this holistic practice of creating, I have been able to return to working part-time as a nurse while also establishing myself as a professional artist. Committed to community, I have been involved in the arts as a presenter, curator, writer, organizer, teaching artist, and advocate. I exhibit regionally and nationally and my work is in collections in Minnesota and New York. I received a 2021 and 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board grant to support my art. The merging of my dual careers values the healing aspects of working with one’s hands and body. My work expresses my life’s journey.
