I became a paraplegic in December of 1986 at the age of 23, following a car accident. At the time, I was also a wife and the mother of a 23-month-old son. I received rehabilitation at Courage Kenny at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, where I worked to regain my strength after breaking four vertebrae in my back. It took time to adjust to life in a manual wheelchair, but I eventually learned to adapt and embrace life from a seated perspective. Before my injury, I was an active person who loved spending time outdoors, especially at the lake. After my accident, returning to the lake was emotionally difficult. It was hard not being able to participate the same way others could. In 1999, a trip to Alaska sparked a new passion: photography. I'm not formally trained; I just love it. When I look through the lens of my camera, it's as if my wheelchair disappears. Photography has helped transform my pain into joy. Through the lens, I see the beauty that God places all around us. Beauty that's always there, if we take the time to look.
