About the Artist
Susan Hass
I live nestled in a temperate rainforest ecosystem in Washington State. I enjoy the outdoors. I notice and capture essences, shapes, and details, and my art depicts the creatures who surround, sustain, and depend on us. I seek to give people a rootedness grounded in local ecology. I received a B.A. in studio art and philosophy from St. Olaf College and studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of British Columbia, and Penland School of Craft. My handmade art practice grounds me in physicality, which strengthens me amidst chronic fatigue syndrome. To adapt, I pace myself and moderate my exertion. My art has been in galleries, exhibits, art fairs, bus shelter, utility boxes, waterway banners, and a city collection. Art of Possibilties encourages people with disabilities to create artwork and brings out into the open the adversity that challenges people, and the ways that people resiliently adapt.
