It was August 17, 2012, I had just plummeted 17 feet from a second story balcony, landing headfirst onto the pavement below. The impact of the fall had pulverized my C7 vertebrae. My spinal cord had been damaged, parts of which had died. Paralyzed from chest down, loss of bladder and bowel function, and a portion of my head shaved, a radically different life lay ahead. I survived an accident that could have killed me. Against the odds, I regained enough muscle function to walk, each step, one that doctors told me would never be possible. C7 is a solo exhibition that shares my experience and the physical, mental and spiritual recovery that shaped the woman I am today. Working in multiple mediums, the show addresses the priority placed on physical beauty and the stigma of disability, the unseen challenges of a life altering injury, and the ability to laugh at that which many would find mortifying. I continue to heal and strive to provide a small measure of hope and healing for others.
