Patricia Doktor
I first noticed hand numbness when I was 32. Slowly my arm got weaker, and occasionally I tripped. When the Dr. told me I had FSHD, it wasn't a surprise; half my family had been disabled by it…and now diagnosed, I knew that my children have a 50 % chance of developing this disease. Over the next 15 years, my symptoms worsened, but with no cure, what could I possibly do about it? I heard about an FSHD conference - it was a scary thought. Was I prepared to see my future? I went. I found people in wheelchairs, but I also found a community not afraid to talk about FSHD or to do something about it. I came home energized. I learned that when I own something, I can do something to change it. I founded the Ghostly Gala FSH Fundraiser and raised 100k. When not donating my time to FSHD, I freelance as a commercial artist or work on my "Drought Tolerant" project, watercolor paintings of succulent succulents.
