"I began creating art in 2017 when I became bedridden with Dysautonomia, a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system. For five years, I did hand-drawn digital art on a tablet to combat boredom. Three years ago, I was able to expand into other media after my doctor prescribed oxygen. The oxygen helps prevent me from passing out due to sudden drops in blood pressure.
With the help of portable oxygen, I can now sit upright for longer periods, allowing me to work with wet paint on canvas and create sculptures. I’m also able to safely drive myself to and from places—though my outings are usually limited to about three times a week for up to four hours. Still, that's enough to participate in local art exhibits and events. Art has become central to my existence.
I lost my job as an attorney when I started passing out without warning. It definitely wasn’t on my bingo card that people would one day be buying my paintings and sculptures in local gift shops and galleries."
