David Ross
David Ross is an artist - educator from Washington DC who recently moved to Philadelphia to work as Temple Universities Makerspace Manager. David sketches stories before using his skills in emerging technology to bring the characters to life. Working in the field of "making" nurtures a number of skillsets in art and technology that mimic the DIY mentality of the designer toy field. Ideas of play, collaboration, and tinkering that carry a childlike comfort are reflective in these characters and his drive to create them. To build these figures, David 3D scanned, modeled, and printed the first two toes (Twumb and Twindex) before casting them in resin. David uses analog sculpting techniques to finish them, incorporating traditional materials such as paint, fabrics, and found objects. Although disability is not the primary concern of David's artwork, his disease often finds its way in to his work to add a level of humor which in turn gives him control over the situation.
