Emily Christianson
The idea that I can create a piece of pottery with my own hands that will be used to fulfill and sustain people is an idea that is thrilling to me. In my early twenties, I experenced signifcant health challenges that it caused me to reexamine every aspect of myself, starting with my brain. For months, I could not read or write. I would go days forgetting to eat, and nights with little to no sleep. Most frustrating of all, I couldn’t create. Having the capability to make art has gotten me through even my roughest patches. In my ceramics work, I am inspired by functional pottery as an art form. I believe that this stems from the difficulties I have had in my journey as it pertains to caring for my own basic needs.
