About the Artist
Gerald Bouma
Gerry Bouma has worked with wood, as a hobby, most of his life. Professionally, he taught music at four universities, including the University of Northwestern in Roseville, MN, over a span of 45 years. During the last years of his teaching, and after he retired from teaching, Gerry worked for a travel company in Texas, taking music groups from around the United States on tours to many different places of the world. In 2013 Gerry contracted Guillain Barre Syndrome, which severely limited his ability to walk, forcing him to give up traveling with groups. "While my career was dedicated to music education, woodworking remained a significant hobby for me. My journey with wood evolved from building our first house to crafting cabinets, creating furniture, engaging in woodturning, and even constructing my own casket last summer. It's always been fascinating to discover the hidden beauty in an old, discarded log or an unassuming piece of wood. I relish the opportunity to explore innovative ideas and designs at the lathe, constantly pushing the boundaries of my craft."
