About the Artist
Kamia White
Kamia White has been making, exhibiting, and selling art for 19 years at PRI, a day program for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Kamia works in a wide range of mediums but gravitates towards drawing and painting as her main practice. Her inspiration comes from childhood memories and pop culture references; old houses she?s lived in, Prince, and action movie stars often appear in her work. This past year, she took inspiration from the ?90s TV show Secret Bodyguard. In this work, she captures the main character Ernie Reyes Jr.?s karate moves with her dynamic brushstrokes and an energetic color palette that evokes a big ?hiya!? The fight choreography in the series also inspired her work as the dance choreographer for PRI?s first original film, Boy Band in a Haunted Hotel (2024), which she also helped write. When Kamia is not painting or dancing, she loves to sing and eat healthy.
