About the Artist
Tom Dolan
Tom Dolan is a self-taught Minneapolis artist who has been making and selling art for over 40 years. Following a stroke in 2017 that left him with complete paralysis on the right side of his body, Tom taught himself how to draw and paint with his left hand. Throughout his rehabilitation period, from his stay at Courage Kenny to his current residence at Catholic Eldercare nursing home,Tom has found a way to make art.During the lockdown of Covid, when art supply stores were closed, Tom made his own materials by extracting colors from crushed dried flowers, steeping tea bags to different strengths and mixing the ends of oil pastels with water to make paint. Tom?s drive to create art is unceasing. These self-portraits show Tom?s view of the desk where he draws. The plants and flowers in the paintings are both a part of the landscape he has created around him, as well as the materials in the paintings.
