Ryan Otterson
Ryan Otterson enjoys a wide range of creative experiences, including drawing, painting, and woodcarving. Woodcarving became an important part of Ryan’s artistic practice after learning the skill through community education classes. Working primarily with basswood, Ryan prefers carving familiar forms such as bears, fish, and birds. Safety and care are central to the process, using protective tools like a thumb guard, glove, safety glasses, and a leather apron made by Ryan’s brother. Carving tools include knives, gouges, a sander, a wood burner, and finishes such as paint and stain, allowing each piece to be thoughtfully shaped and detailed. When not carving, Ryan can often be found in a downstairs art room painting, drawing, or experimenting with new ideas. Art remains a source of enjoyment and curiosity, summed up simply in Ryan’s belief that art is fun to do and something more people should try.
