About the Artist

Jaqui Mejia

Jaqui Mejia is a painter and tattoo artist whose work is driven by a desire to bring more color into the world. Trained in painting and graphic design at Alfred University, Jaqui’s path shifted after the sudden loss of function in the dominant hand, which required a rethinking of how art could be made. Through adaptive methods, including designing digitally and projecting images onto surfaces for painting, Jaqui developed a practice that blends intention with experimentation. The recovery process became inseparable from the work itself, with themes often exploring chronic pain and mental health while remaining visually bold and expansive. Vivid color palettes and unexpected use of line create a striking contrast between heavy subject matter and energetic presentation. Jaqui’s paintings function as windows into alternate worlds, inviting viewers to consider not only what the world is, but what it might become.

Location: On display at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute
