About the Artist

Sydney Mangaroo

What does it mean to be a woman? Over the past few years, I have found myself contemplating this question. Growing up as a mixed race and first generation American girl did not come easy. Advertising, movies, fashion all seemed to represent the idea of someone I could never be. Reflecting on these feelings, I found solace in my mind as I comforted my inner child. Memories are the foundation for our perception of the world. The human psyche is a delicate playground and how we internalize our interactions determines how we remember life. Drawing inspiration from the subconscious mind creates an ominous, naive, and sometimes jarring outlook on reality. Working with a warmer palette contrasting rich darks and soft pastels, there is a deep ethereality to the spaces I create. Enduring brain injuries during my formative years led me on a healing journey both physical and emotional. By painting from the void state in my own mind, I am documenting my navigation of memory and identity.
