About the Artist
Jill Ness
My formal education is in creative writing (MFA, Emerson College, 1993); as an artist I am self-taught. I believe the first rule of art is the same as it is for writing: learn the rules, then break them. I am an avid reader and inspired by literature, nature and the work of other artists, including children. My best art comes through play and the willingness to make mistakes, which often turn into welcome accidents. My favorite artist quote is from Picasso: "Every child is an artist. The challenge is how to remain an artist once you grow up."
