About the Artist

Kelly Meiners

Kelly Meiners uses abstract painting as a primary form of communication, giving shape to emotions that became difficult to access after sustaining significant brain and multi‑organ damage from COVID‑19. Before this sudden and life‑altering illness, Kelly lived a full and active life as a busy parent, physical therapist, college professor, and academic department chair. Today, Kelly is homebound and largely bedridden, and art has become an essential way of processing a radically changed reality. Abstract painting offers space to explore acceptance and presence, where an empty canvas represents possibility rather than limitation. While creating, a profound sense of peace emerges, allowing focus to shift away from disability and toward expression. Kelly works in short, carefully paced bursts of concentrated energy, often painting while lying on the floor and using adapted tools to steady physical tremors. Acrylic, oil pastels, and graphite are used to build layered, intuitive compositions. Through this practice, Kelly hopes to share messages of hope and joy in a world shaped by uncertainty.
