About the Artist
Alex Schnarr
Alex Schnarr makes art that puts you at ease. He strives for his art to be helpful and worry-free, like how the process of creating his layered paintings helps him to relax. Alex has a repetitive and meditative painting practice: choose a color of paint, cover the entire canvas, and repeat! He is methodical about making sure every corner of the painting is covered. Due to his low vision, it is difficult for Alex to see certain colors. Red, yellow, blue, and black are easier colors to see and feature prominently in his work. Alex works on each canvas for weeks at a time, applying 50+ layers of paint until he can “make sure that it is done.” This thick application of acrylic paint gives each canvas a rough texture that begins to build into a 3D paint landscape that is impossible to replicate. He lives in Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis and has been painting for 18 years.
