Artist Statement: The art and the blind by Rossana Kelton I have been blind in my right eye since I was a child in South America. My family was not wealthy, and I lacked the medical treatment to correct my visual problem. My school had large windows with beautiful eucalyptus trees when I was a child. I spent a large part of my time playing with drawings of the trees. I remember my second-grade teacher Helena getting upset with me because I was not paying attention. After all, I enjoyed drawing. My school was located in a soccer (football) stadium. When the teams were playing, it was very noisy and difficult to hear the teachers. I took the time to draw when it became clear that it was too difficult to listen to the teachers. The loss of my vision did not deny me aesthetic pleasures. As an artist, I am at a severe disadvantage in experiencing works of art because I cannot touch them. The artwork became more burdensome as I matured due to my vision impairment.
