About the Artist
Susan Hass
My handmade, tactile artistry grounds me in the physical world, drawing from the ecological family that sustains, depends upon, and encompasses us. My practice seeks to deepen our rootedness in nature through both studio and public art. I find peace in relating to elements like water and animals, experiencing both delight and suffering, aiming to coexist peacefully on this planet. Art creation deepens my appreciation for myriad creatures, influenced by a wide array of artists—public, feminist, indigenous, Japanese, folk, environmental, and more. Inspired by public parks and libraries, my work reflects a diverse range of inspirations. Despite the limitations imposed by chronic fatigue syndrome and limited scleroderma, which restrict my energy, my art practice bolsters my spirit and body. Born in Durham, NC, I have harbored a love for art and wildlife, both wild and domestic, from an early age. My time in Minnesota, attending St. Olaf College where I majored in studio art and philosophy, and later living and working in Saint Paul, has enriched my life and work.
