About the Artist
Hongyu Shen
I was born in Suzhou, China, to a family of two doctors. I was in a competitive academic environment from a young age. For high school, I moved to Canada alone to attend a boarding school on an Island, and studied Aristotle, Hegel, Marx, Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, and Sartre on my own outside of taking AP classes. Throughout my life, I have dealt with many mental health issues, that resulted in chronic pain that prevent me from working for more than five hours a day. I see my work as continuing the process of struggle, between abstraction and figuration, and between spontaneity and meticulous planning. I utilize the fragility and potency of the human body, situated in ambiguous environments with non-traditional perspectives. My goal is to create works that are accessible, yet uncompromising in their conceptual complexity. Central recurring themes in my work are trauma, incompleteness, negativity, void, and alterity.
