About the Artist
Growing up in small-town Iowa, my 7th-grade art teacher said I had the least potential for art of any student he had ever taught. Not having the confidence or insight to question this opinion, creating was not a part of my life until…My life altered in an instant, 45 years ago, while working as an RN in a spinal cord injury unit transferring a quadriplegic patient. He was fine, I was left with spinal nerve damage. After numerous surgeries and treatments, I was left with chronic pain and limited mobility. In my life after my nursing career ended, I discovered the joy of working with my hands. The mediums in which I create have to be lightweight and worked from my semi-reclining position. Weaving pine needle baskets, wire jewelry, and macrame have become my passions. Creating has saved my life, helping me cope with pain and limitations, giving me positive mental energy and a sense of self-pride. It is important for my family witnesses these positives. Creating is the gift of my pain.
Art on display at Courage Kenny and online gallery.
