About the Artist

Karen Wood

Karen Wood’s passion for art began in childhood while watching her mother paint in the 1960s. Although a discouraging experience with a teacher nearly ended that path, Karen had already been living with hearing loss since birth and learned early, with her mother’s guidance, how to persist through obstacles. In 1994, while raising two daughters as a single parent, including one with a disability, Karen developed chronic pain that left her bed‑bound and reliant on a wheelchair and crutches. During that time, art became a lifeline. Drawing wherever she sat earned her the nickname “armchair artist,” and creating quite literally kept her going. In 2018, improved pain management made it possible to return to painting and drawing for enjoyment. Today, Karen works from a small garage studio, pacing herself with frequent breaks while also supporting her daughter. Art continues to guide and support her, offering imagination, purpose, and hope. Karen’s message is simple and hard‑won: for anyone who is struggling, do not quit.

Location: On display at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute
