Gwendolyn Stangel
Gwendolyn Stangel is a multidisciplinary artist and graduate of the University of Minnesota whose creative practice spans knitting, needlepoint, sculpture, welding, photography, and painting. In 2023, a stroke led to a seven‑week hospitalization and an ongoing rehabilitation journey at Courage Kenny addressing aphasia, apraxia, and impacts to the right side of her body. During recovery, art has become essential. Now creating photographs and collages with her left hand, Gwendolyn relies on her artistic eye as a primary form of communication when words are difficult to reach. Making art allows her to articulate what cannot yet be spoken, offering clarity, connection, and presence. Each piece reflects determination and adaptability, as creativity supports both healing and identity. Through image‑making, Gwendolyn continues to engage with the world while steadily working to regain abilities and express inner life with honesty and care.
