About the Artist
Nancy Cook Smith
Being deaf, I didn’t have the same means of communication as other kids, the creation of something physical, visual became my voice. I had an innate affinity to the tactile nature of things and a great sense of color. I started sewing when I was ten. I describe my work as fabric collage. My approach is simple: take found fabrics, cut them up, put them back together in a new composition. These initial items are cut up for elements I want to repurpose, re-organize, refresh and redefine. Conceptually my collages follow two paths. Most pieces center on a formalist concern where a “chaotic” composition is grown over an often obscured geometric skeleton. Order (or lack of), movement, color, shape, mood are my main focus. In others I construct a surrealist narrative where items create a dynamic but unclear story. Sometimes these two paths merge.
