The main subject of this assemblage painting, sitting on a beautifully rusted metal platter, is the entangled hand-painted contortionists complemented by an abstract landscape of miscellaneous found objects and painted shapes including another contortionist I left "flat".
About the Artist
I’m Al Benkin: a pop-surreal painter, woodworker, and found object assemblage artist born with one arm. I often include "otherly-abled" bodies in my work. The co-existence of both human-made and natural worlds and how they coexist inspire my art. I concentrate on passages of time and the absurdities of daily life. I repurpose discarded objects (including door knockers, plastic forks). Deconstructing and reconstructing these “happy ghosts” aka precious upcycled objects, often fuel my art. I finish portraying key concepts by painting iconographical, personalized modern myths. Some of my work is painting on canvas and some are an amalgam of other mediums. No matter what, they are all related to each other in a world I created called “Mutantland”.
Art on display at Courage Kenny and online gallery.
