Rebecca Stapleton
A Traumatic brain injury upended Rebecca’s life and limited her abilities to participate in work and society. A few years ago, a friend sent her a set of watercolors. She thought...I’m not artistic, what am I going to do with this? The friend encouraged her, "it's good for brain recovery, just play." Newer to making art, Rebecca finds it challenging and the results elusive. Ironically watercolor is hard to control, which is not ideal for a struggling perfectionist. Unable to attend classes, she learns from library books, YouTube and lots of mistakes. Every once in a while the art accidentally works out, gives her a glimpse of hope, accomplishment, and improved self-worth. She’s realizing that art is trying to teach her how to practice self-compassion by getting out of her own way (negative self-talk), and to create amidst debilitating challenges. She’s learning that the goal of art is not perfection; it is to express the artist's perspective through the lens of their unique abilities.
