About the Artist
Ariana Engle is a Saint Louis-based multi-disciplined artist, and a graduate of the University of Missouri. Throughout her practice, fine arts has given her an outlet to express herself in ways not possible before, as she has autism and C-PTSD which affects her ability to communicate and interact with her environment. Through printmaking, she has abstracted artificial landscapes that focus on tension and command the seemingly uncontrollable. Engle combines “spontaneous” layering of ink to mimic Pollock’s movement of paint with the process of printmaking, which is historically precise and planned. By utilizing the permanence that each plate has, she actively rejects reproduction, a vital component of the printmaking world, making each plate a flow of movement that cannot be recreated. With her pulling from urban textures and forms for imagery (such as stains and graffiti), she comments on her lack of authority felt by the compounding sprawl of industry on the natural world.
