Michael Miessen
Michael Miessen is a multidisciplinary artist and craftsperson whose work reflects an evolving awareness of place, identity, and connection within a larger cultural landscape. Creating across many forms and materials, Michael sees each piece as part of a longer story shaped by history, knowledge, and relationships, much like the rings of a tree record the conditions that influenced its growth. Art and craft have been central to Michael’s understanding of life’s breadth and complexity for many years. Since surviving West Nile Virus and encephalitis in 2012, including a period in a coma, creating has taken on even deeper significance. Making work supports an ongoing process of rediscovering limits while also revealing an expanded capacity for resilience and growth. Through thoughtful construction and material exploration, Michael’s practice honors survival, adaptability, and the ability to continue thriving through creativity.
