Emily Tironi
As a woman with a disability, I like to focus on disability through a societal and cultural lens in my work as well as other issues I care about. Collage, as the art of putting materials and images together to create a new and different whole, is a fitting medium for this subject. I collect images relating to a specific topic from a variety of sources and then add and layer them into a composition, often adding color throughout the process with gel sticks and other mediums. I combine bold bright colors with graphic images to immerse the viewer in my concept and give them something new to see. I use my personal experiences as a disabled person and my education in Disability Studies to inform my work. By doing this, I hope to challenge societal norms and stereotypes.
