About the Artist
Nancy Smith
Being deaf, I didn’t have the same means of communication as other kids, the creation of something physical, visual became my voice. I had an innate affinity to the tactile nature of things and a great sense of color. I started sewing when I was ten. I describe my work as ‘fabric collage’. For the past few years I have been cutting up and re-constituting various fabrics into wall pieces about the size of small and mid size paintings. Structurally, pieces are made from found and bought fabrics that are both printed and woven. These initial items are cut up for elements I want to repurpose, re-organize, refresh and redefine. Conceptually my collages follow two paths. Most pieces center on a formalist concern where a “chaotic” composition is grown over an often obscured geometric skeleton. Order (or lack of), movement, color, shape, mood are my main focus. In others I construct a surrealist narrative where items create a dynamic but unclear story. Sometimes these two paths merge.
